no-man - returning

working in nomansland

returning director, Richard Smith, kindly let me see a preview copy of the forthcoming 90 minute no-man documentary. Without giving away the contents of the documentary too much, I will say that it covers the whole history of the band, with previously unseen footage of early no-man performances, as well as in-depth interviews with Tim & Steven, on their own and together in the studio, plus contributions from many no-man collaborators and colleagues, past and present.

back when you were beautiful

returning includes exclusive footage of Tim & Steven working together last year on a new track in nomansland, as well as rehearsal footage from 2008’s live return. The documentary shines a light, for the first time, on how Tim & Steven work together, and the often overlooked playfulness and dark humour of no-man is very evident in their discussions and performances.

2008 live dates rehearsals

The personal highlights for me were the sections from returning jesus onwards (in my eyes, no-man’s strongest period), and the honesty and passion evident in the comments from Tim, Steven and Ben Coleman.

Richard Smith has produced a very direct and gimmick-free documentary, and he wisely lets the band and it's music be the driving force and the sole story on show throughout. Too often, music documentaries are either completely framed in the time in which they were filmed, or make too many references to historical events that exist around the eras in which bands have been active. returning accurately highlights that the majority of no-man’s music, whilst occasionally showing its influences, takes on its own identity, and at its best becomes timeless (speak and together we’re stranger being obvious examples of this).

live in 2008

returning is a rare beast, in that it is a documentary that stands up to repeated viewings. There is a healthy mixture of interviews peppered with live performances and video clips from throughout the bands history. It's also not just an extra tagged onto the live DVD, it is a separate entity that, whilst being a no-man fans dream, is an excellent appetiser for those who are maybe discovering no-man's music for the first time.

no-man - wherever there is light

Acting as a bridge between No-Man's elegiac 2008 return Schoolyard Ghosts and the forthcoming live concert DVD Mixtaped, Wherever There Is Light is a strictly limited edition CD release.

From Schoolyard Ghosts, the poignant title track features an incredible guest performance from US pedal steel legend Bruce Kaphan (American Music Club/Red House Painters). The alt-country tinged Death Was California and the atmospheric Counting are two new songs especially written for the EP, while Carolina Skeletons and All The Blue Changes are the first recordings released from No-Man's Autumn 2008 mini-tour.

Also containing Grant Wakefied's poetic video for the title track, a powerful preview from the Mixtaped DVD, and striking Carl Glover artwork, the enhanced Wherever There Is Light EP is a rare and beautiful thing from the band Uncut memorably described as 'Britain's most underrated sorrowful sonic architects'.

returning jesus demos

Now available from the Burning shed download store: no-man - returning jesus demos. A collection of the demos written and recorded for returning jesus, this download album was originally issued as the third disc of Tonefloat's lavish returning jesus - the complete sessions vinyl release in 2005.

These alternate, and often very different, versions of returning jesus songs date from between 1994 and 1998 and comprise the creative groundwork of what was to become no-man's most popular and critically acclaimed album.

Highlights of this download album include a very different version of like a child (mostly built around sampled childrens voices & soaring flute), a version of lighthouse similar in mood & arrangment to the version given away on the official no-man website a few years ago, but sonically superior, and with a slightly different arrangement (and alternate lyrics towards the end of the song). A slow paced, lower temperature take on chelsea cap scrapes away the pop gloss of the previously released version, and makes me feel that this version would have sat comfortably on the original returning jesus album. The longer (heartbeat paced) version of slow it all down, and all that you are, with different drums, and a Bowness 50's matinee idol croon, round off this haunting collection of demos that sound nothing like demos!

Full tracklisting: song about the heart (2.47) / darkroom - alternate version (5.35) / like a child (4.08) / chelsea cap - alternate version (6.50) / lighthouse - demo (9.04) / slow it all down - long version (5.13) / all that you are - demo (4.37)

Priced at £5.10 GBP (mp3) and £7.00 GBP (flac) - the download album can be purchased here.
